Blood and Bones

By Sai Yoichi

One of the many films, featured at the Iffr 2010, of Sai Yoichi.
The film took over 2 and a half hours to tell the story about a man and his family which he oppressed with furious anger. Impressive film that is in no way too long. 5 out of 5!

Surprise film:
Gainsbourg: Je T’aime, Moi Non Plus / Vie héroïque
by Joann Sfar
The last feature on Friday night was a surprise film and nobody knew what it was going to be. When we stuffed the theater full with 760 people, the movie could begin and to everybody’s surprise it was the biopic on Serge Gainsbourg (Lucien Ginsburg) , the writer of the most famous erotic-tinted song ever written: “Je T’aime, moi non plus” who died in 1992 at the age of 62.
Lucy Gordon, who plays the part as Gainsbourg’s muse Jane Birkin, has killed herself weeks after filming and finishing this movie. Thus the movie is dedicated to her.Jane Birkin was the girlfriend of Gainsbourg in ‘69 that presented “Je T’aime” to the world after Brigitte Bardot backed out of it, although Bardot was the one who had originally recorded it and for whom the song was written.
The movie contains the best and most beautiful music of Serge Gainsbourg. Here’s a clip on the recordings of those songs for the film.

No One Knows About Persian Cats

By Bahman Ghobadi

An Iranian film of which the director is no longer welcome in his country.

The most impressive documentary I have ever seen, next to last years doc about Baghdad. Wauw, one word wauw, I actually had tears flowing during the beautiul songs played by the people in the movie and the lyrics that tell their story. The directors girlfriend is also present after the screening, she is the journalist that was jailed in Iran last year on the suspision of spying. Two beautiful people that love their country that is slowly starting to love them back, but still has a long way to come.

The Trotsky
by Jacob Tierney
A hilarious film, that was a joy to watch, about a student that thinks he is the reincarnation of the great Trotsky. It was chosen as the Volunteer Movie for us and it ended around 1:30 AM after already a day of watching films and guiding the public in and out of other screenings, but at no time during this film did I have the urge to fall asleep.
A solid 5 out of 5 and a must-see.

Let’s Fall in Love

by Wu Wuna

A beautiful documentary on couples in Taiwan that seek their happiness in mariage. The secret is taught by a close friend of Wu Wuna and the stories are real and funny. A definate 5 out of 5 for this young filmmaker that has left sad stories behind her when she turned 30 and this is her first feature that is meant to be fun. She has succeeded without a doubt.

Un prophèteby Jacques Audiard
A sensationally good film :-)
No, really, it was very very good. It’s a long feature spanning over 2 and a half hours, but at no time was I wondering how long it would take till the end.
I wont go into the story, all I can say is go and see for yourself if you have the chance.

Do It Again

By Robert Patton-Spruill

I talked with the director after the movie and he was so excited to have the movie featured at the Iffr 2010. They funded the documentary/movie about the attempt to get The Kinks back together via the Internet site Kickstart. The Kinks’ songs that enriched the movie are great and the interviews with some of greatest musicians of all time make a joy for the eye and ears. We all know the lyrics of “Lola” but not everyone knows it’s by The Kinks. Who would have guessed that Sting would be playing a song together with Geoff, the journalist.

It is a 5 out of 5 for me, although it feels a little inappropriat to give it to a documentary that should maybe be featured at IDFA. But Iffr got the world premiere and I’m glad it did!
